Matthew Williams: Spiritual Abuse Allegations Add to the Trainwreck
The story of Joan Furman, more ROCOR investigation failures, and why priests should not play "psychiatrist".
As the horrific child sexual abuse case of Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) priest Fr Matthew Williams continues to unfold, another one of his victims has come forward with allegations of spiritual abuse. In this case the complainant is an adult and the allegations concern manipulative, controlling and spiritually abusive behaviour on Williams’ part. Spiritual abuse is broadly defined as:
Abuse that involves using religious or spiritual beliefs to control, manipulate, or harm another person, often within intimate relationships or faith communities. It’s a form of emotional and psychological abuse characterized by coercive control, most often by religious leaders such as priests, who misuse their trusted position for their own sexual and psychological gratification.
Joan Furman was a parishioner at William’s former church, St Tikhon’s in Blountville, Tennessee (USA). Joan originally reported her allegations in December of 2024 about events that has taken place earlier that year, when she had moved to the St Tikhon parish due to family circumstances. The report was made both in writing and in person in an interview with two senior ROCOR clerics of the Eastern American Diocese, Archpriests Mark Mancuso and Alexandre Antchoutine. The full account of her complaint was published at the rocorabuse.org website that has closely followed the Matthew Williams case in the United States. The full account is republished at the bottom of this article.
In summary, Joan tells her story of having to move to Matthew Williams’ parish of St Tikhon on Blountville Tennessee around mid 2022. At the time Joan was experiencing a number of complex, ongoing, serious health and family issues that meant she was in an understandably vulnerable situation. Adding to this, Joan had experienced a serious sexual assault many years prior that had left her with a lifelong trauma. Despite these hardships, she bravely sought and found solace in Christ and the Orthodox Church. Whilst initially being very helpful, Joan’s story describes how Matthew Williams took upon himself the role of counsellor and psychiatrist. He attempted to get Joan to stop her prescribed and much needed medication which she did for a short time during which she suffered a critical deterioration of her health that could have been potentially fatal. He also manipulated Joan by placing himself in the role of being her sole father confessor and confidant. Ultimately Joan had to end this relationship with Williams after a highly inappropriate and demeaning “counselling” conversation during which Williams attempted to probe Joan on completely unnecessary and irrelevant sexual matters and past trauma.

Joan’s story highlight’s a number of serious ongoing concerns:
That Matthew William’s abuse was not limited to children but to the spiritual abuse of adult parishioners as well. It has already been previously covered that he was allegedly responsible for domestic violence and psychological abuse against his wife and family for many years. He is now facing criminal charges for these offences
That ROCOR has a poorly defined and outdated investigation process; does not have clergy or lay officials qualified or competent to conduct abuse investigations; does not communicate with complainants in a way that is appropriate, timely and transparent; and has no insight, or simply does not care, into the ongoing reputational damage it’s causing itself by failing to be transparent, publicly communicative and frank in its response to the ongoing abuse crisis in multiple diocese.
That there is serious risk presented to the wellbeing of parishioners, when priests overstep their brief of offering spiritual advice, and start to “play psychiatrist”. Williams’ advice to Joan that her mental health problems were all spiritual and that she should stop her medication, was dangerous, unethical and extremely irresponsible. This is just one of many similar instances that have been reported of Orthodox priests seeking to reframe mental health issues as spiritual ones and interfering in professional, medical treatments.
Spiritual Abuse
Priests hold a position of great power. People turn to priests in time of need and to seek guidance in their lives. Part of this relationship dynamic, involves putting a great degree of trust in the priest to whom one has turned. While most priests accept this role with great responsibility and care, some like Williams, use it to establish a powerful and manipulative control over vulnerable people like Joan. In Williams’ case it was to further satisfy his sick, sexual appetite, while in the process causing even further trauma to his victim. It also pushes otherwise good people away from the Church, the complete opposite of what a priest is meant to do.
As previously covered in Pokrov Truth, and well articulated by Matthew Williams’ former sister-in-law Michelle Stewart in her YouTube interview, spiritual abuse was at the core of the Agape Community cult in which he grew up. It is a well documented fact that children that suffer sexual, spiritual and psychological abuse will often repeat these behaviours as adults. While in no way taking away from his own evil and wilful intentions, this at least in some way goes to explain how Matthew Williams became the predator he is today.
More ROCOR Investigation Failures
Having been in recent contact with Joan Furman, Pokrov Truth can confirm that as of October 2025, nine months since her in-person interview with Fr Mark Mancuso and Fr Alexandre Antchoutine, she has received not a single further contact from anyone at EA Diocese! This is despite numerous emails requesting updates, the most recent being in September 2025. The normal, acceptable and professional practice in any organization receiving a complaint, especially if this complaint involves a serious abuse allegation, is to send a written reply that acknowledges the complaint and makes a commitment to an investigation. If there is even the slightest suggestion of a crime, the reply should strongly advise the complainant to also make a police report. No such written acknowledgement was ever received from ROCOR leadership.
Joan’s most recent email below, is politely and articulately worded and at the very least, required an acknowledgement from the ROCOR Eastern American Diocese administration. Its recipients included Metropolitan Nicholas and Bishop Luke, the two heads of EA Diocese and Archpriest Mark Mancuso, the EA Dean of the Carolinas & Tennessee. There can be no other conclusion, that none of these church leaders feel the slightest responsibility of their lofty offices, to even reply to someone who has been a victim of Matthew Williams abuse. It can be further surmised, that none of these church leaders even want to have anything to do with the case and simply default to ROCOR’s standard operating procedure of a wall of silence and coverup.

Joan Furman’s interview was recorded in both audio format and by Joan’s submission of her written complaint. Here is the audio recording with enhanced volume. The two clergy conducting the interview are ROCOR EA Diocese Archpriests Mark Mancuso (Dean of Carolinas & Tennessee) and Alexandre Antchoutine.
Joan Furman’s Audio Statement
Highlights of the audio recording worth noting:
46:58 Fr Alexandre admits Matthew Williams has a “Very, very serious sickness”
48:52 Fr Alexandre agrees there is a distinction between medical and spiritual needs (and implicitly that priests should not give medical advice as Williams did)
52:07 Fr Mark promises “We will help you”, however no further communication from him has been received by Joan in the 9 months since.
53:14 Fr Mark suggests that if Joan has anything further to report, she should send it to him. If he is referring to sexual abuse allegations then this is an attempt at gate-keeping and in direct contradiction of the ROCOR Guidelines on Issues of Sexual Misconduct which on pg.6 explicitly state the complaint should go directly to the “President of the Synod” which is the Metropolitan.
See here:
The most concerning statement of all though, comes from Fr Mark Mancuso:
51:37 “I told Bishop Luke, its not possible for him (Fr Matthew Williams) to COME BACK without, you know, huge changes”.

If one is to read that correctly, then, despite having full knowledge by this stage of not only the incident with Joan, but the horrific sexual abuse perpetrated by Matthew Williams against his own children which came to light a few months earlier, Fr Mark Mancuso actually believes that there is some scenario where Williams can come back! This staggering statement gives an excellent insight into the mentality of ROCOR leadership in respect to abusive priests. Specifically it is an attitude that sexual abuse is no big deal, that even a priest like like Williams whose victims included his god-daughter and own children, can still “come back”. This statement also serves as an example of clergy who act as protectors, enablers and apologists for pedophiles in their ranks. Mark Mancuso is such a clergyman and he joins the ranks of Fr Boris Ignatievsky who attempted the same tactic with the convicted Archimandrite Alexis Rosentool in Australia.
At the time of writing, new information is surfacing about Fr Mark Mancuso’s coverup of predatory behaviour involving his own family however even the attitude that he expresses in Joan Furman’s interview, raises questions about his fitness to continue to serve not only as the ROCOR EA Diocese Dean of the Carolina’s but even as priest altogether. As Pokrov Truth repeatedly states: there is NO place in our communities for abusers, their enablers or apologists in the priesthood in ANY form.

Unqualified Investigators
A major problem with many church investigations of sexual, and other types of abuse, is that the people doing the investigating are completely unqualified for the job. To be able to competently investigate abuse, one needs special training in at least some of the disciplines of investigative techniques, psychology, counselling, mental health, trauma informed care and specific legal frameworks concerning abuse. In this case, Fr Mark Mancuso’s qualifications are in librarianship while Fr Alexandre Antchoutine is a builder. Neither of these men are qualified to conduct proper investigations.

Priests Are Not Psychiatrists
As stated earlier, the other main concern with Matthew Williams and Joan Furman is Williams taking on the role of a psychiatrist and counsellor. There are numerous incidents regularly reported where parishioners are given medical advice by priests. Most often this is in relation to common mental health issues like depression and anxiety. In past centuries, there was little understanding of mental health issues of this kind and they were all written off as spiritual and demonic ailments. Today there is a great deal of research and science into the underlying causes of such illnesses, things like chemical and hormonal imbalances and the effects of substance abuse and childhood trauma. Under no circumstances should priests like Matthew Williams be allowed to persuade vulnerable people like Joan Furman to stop prescribed medication. This is not a job for priests and in such cases, if someone were to die because of advice given by a priest, the Church may very likely be liable for a massive compensation pay-out.

As the slow motion, burning trainwreck of the Williams’ case proceeds, and more connected incidents and accomplices are revealed, the abuse response crisis in ROCOR only grows. The complete inability of the hierarchy, and especially of Metropolitan Nicholas, to comprehend the need for an urgent, public and transparent response, has compromised his leadership to the point where he may even need to stand down before any more damage to ROCOR occurs.
A source close to the Synod has recently revealed on the condition of anonymity, that there is growing concern among the older and more experienced bishops of the Synod, that Nicholas Olhovsky rose too fast, and without sufficient diocesan management or pastoral experience. Some believe him to be too authoritarian and abrasive in his management style and that some sort of behind-the-scenes leadership change plan is already in the works. The source believes this leadership change may come before the end of the year and would be presented as being a health related, temporary measure, at least for a period of time until a replacement could be found. The source added that:
“Patriarch Kirill is well aware of this current turmoil in ROCOR and monitoring events closely with increasing concern”.

This week, the official ROCOR website published another interview of Metropolitan Nicholas with the “Russian Life” newspaper. and once again he made no mention of the sexual abuse crisis and maintained the “business as usual” narrative he is well known for.
In part of his response to the question: “What main tasks would you set for the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in the coming years?” the Metropolitan responded:
“The younger generation needs to be given a good and solid foundation of Orthodox faith .”
While this is a good generic answer, a better answer by the Metropolitan would have been to make an explicit commitment to all ROCOR youth that they will be protected from predators like Alexis Rosentool and Matthew Williams, and that a program of cleansing the clerical ranks of all pedophiles, their defenders and enablers would be immediately undertaken. After all, what sort of “good and solid foundation of Orthodox faith” can be laid when this same youth are raped and abused by their own priests while the hierarchy sits idly by and pretends nothing is wrong?

Thank you I understand. Thos has not been an easy path to walk... I have stumbled many times along the way. I appreciate your support and prayers.
thank you for another intersting post. This looks like a pattern of shutting things down and not responding from the hierarchs. This happened to us in relation to a much much less serious issue. However, the higher ups won't engage even on that. and that leaves us....where? we can only assume they don't care about the issues we bring to them.
